Back To School Reset: Health and Fitness Tips

Creek Fit - August 2025 Newsletter 1

As the school year begins, it's the perfect time for students and families to refocus on health and fitness. Establishing healthy routines early can lead to better academic performance, improved concentration, and overall well-being. From balanced nutrition and regular physical activity to proper sleep and stress management, taking a proactive approach to health helps students stay energized and ready to learn. Prioritizing wellness now sets the stage for a successful and productive school year ahead.

Having a Good Night’s Rest

It is important to start sleeping early before school starts so your body and brain can adjust to a new routine. It is recommended that children ages 6 to 12 require a minimum of nine hours of sleep, and adolescents need a minimum of eight hours of sleep. Having a consistent bedtime routine can make mornings much easier and help you stay sharp for learning, playing and making new friends. Some things that can help to have a goodnights rest is to turn off screens before bed, avoid big meals or sugary snacks, keeping your room quiet and cozy, etc.

Healthy Meals and Staying Hydrated

Eating healthy and staying hydrated plays a big role in helping kids succeed during the school year. Nutritious meals fuel the brain and body, giving students the energy they need to stay focused, think clearly, and learn effectively. The best way to start off the day before school is to eat a nutritious breakfast. After a night of sleep, the body needs fuel to kick start the day, and skipping breakfast can lead to fatigue, irritability, and difficulty focusing. Student who eat breakfast tend to be more focuses in the class than those who skip it.

Staying hydrated is essential for students during the school year because water plays a vital role in nearly every function of the body, including brain activity. Even mild dehydration can affect cognitive performance, leading to difficulty concentrating, headaches, and tiredness, all of which can interfere with learning and academic success. Drinking water can support brain function, proper hydration helps regulate body temperature maintain energy levels, and support digestion and physical activity. Many students participate in sports, recess, or other physical activities, and staying hydrated is crucial to avoid fatigue and prevent heat related issues.

Stay Active

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean the activity should stop. Keeping kids active during the school year is just as important. Since kids spend most of the day sitting, adding sports and exercise to their daily routine is essential for staying focused, improving behavior, and promoting a positive attitude. By including movement throughout the day –whether through a gym class, recess, or after school sports, students can build habits that promote lifelong health and well-being. Exercise is a natural stress reliever, helping students cope with academic pressures, social challenges, and everyday worries.

Mental Wellness

Mental Wellness during the school year is just as important as physical health because it directly affects how students learn, behave, and interact with others. Good mental health also boost self-esteem and resilience, helping students bounce back from the setbacks like poor grades or social conflicts. Untreated stress, anxiety, or emotional struggles can interfere with concentration, memory, and motivation, making it harder for students to succeed academically and socially. That’s why it is important for schools and families to create environments where students feel safe, heard, and supported.

The importance of self-care and taking breaks during busy school days cannot be overstated when it comes to supporting mental wellness. Participating in self-care activities helps students recharge and avoid emotional burnout. By stepping away briefly and engaging in enjoyable or relaxing activities, students can manage feelings of stress and overwhelm more effectively. These small breaks help maintain a healthy balance between school responsibilities and personal well-being.

Consistency in Maintaining Wellness Practices

Parents can promote consistency in wellness habits by modeling healthy behaviors themselves and fostering a home environment that values well-being. Creating structured routines that incorporate activities like physical exercise, nutritious meals, and meaningful family time helps make wellness a regular part of daily life. Offering gentle encouragement, recognizing children’s efforts, and highlighting the positive effects of these practices can inspire kids to remain committed and build lasting healthy habits. When parents encourage open communication, they gain insight into their children's struggles and needs, fostering a relationship built on trust and empathy. Participating in wellness activities as a family—like preparing healthy meals or spending time outdoors—not only strengthens family connections but also sets a positive example. In addition, consistent emotional support and encouragement from loved ones help children manage stress, stay optimistic, and support their overall well-being and academic success throughout the school year.
